A press release by the World Meteorological Organization hints at 2014 as the hottest year on record.  A provisional report based on Jan-Oct global data hints at a ~0.1 °C increase in annual average global temperature with respect to the most recent decade, and a ~0.5 °C increase from the past ~50 years.  2014 has also being marred by violent, destructive, and often lethal floodings all over the world.  The atmospheric disruption also may have impaired the initiation of an El Niño year in the southwestern tropical Pacific Ocean.

The official press release (WMO's press release number 1009) and the provisional report (in PDF format) can be found at the WMO website at http://www.wmo.it.

The news has been reported also by the Scientific American at http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/2014-to-be-hottest-year-ever-measured/.
